The Campus Safety & Fairness Petition

penrose petition

This Fall Term, StAC will be organizing around the Campus Safety & Fairness Petition. The CS&FP is directed at the Office of the President and the Board of Trustees, calling on them to:

  1. Institute an immediate, indefinite tuition-freeze on resident, non-resident and international tuition.
  2. Institute an immediate, indefinite freeze on salaries for all administrators making over $110,000/y.
  3. Bargain a mutually acceptable contract with PSU-AAUP.
  4. Bargain a mutually acceptable contract with PSUFA-AFT.
  5. Improve lighting on campus by the beginning of the Spring 2014 term.
  6. Double the number of emergency call boxes on campus by the beginning of the Spring 2014 term.
  7. Create a working group to research, design, and implement a work-study safe-walk program by the beginning of the Spring 2014 term.
  8. Sign a public oath stating that the Office of the President/the Board of Trustees will not deputize the Campus Public Safety Office (CPSO) into a police force without a student majority vote. In the event of such a vote, ASPSU would be then equipped with the proper funding and the appropriate resources (to the satisfaction of ASPSU) to carry out such a plebiscite.
  9. Respond to the demands of the Campus Safety & Fairness Petition by Friday of Week Six, November 8th. A failure to do so will be treated as a rejection and responded to accordingly.

We hope to partner with ASPSU and other student groups to outreach around the petition, and in all likelihood, a student organizer will be coming to speak to your class about signing the petition in the first few weeks of the term.

By signing the CS&FP, you will also be counted as a member of the Portland State University Student Union, PSUSU, and will be encouraged to come to the first general assembly of the student union. At the assembly, there will be briefings from faculty and concerned students regarding issues including the administration’s continued refusal to bargain any semblance of a fair contract with our two faculty unions, as well as the proposed deputization of the Campus Public Safety Office (CPSO), administrative bloat, PSU splitting off from the Oregon University System, and the prospect of students working to freeze tuition.

You can sign the CS&FP at http://www.PSUSU.org as soon as the site goes live at the beginning of Fall Term, or in the Greenspace in Smith next to Food For Thought Cafe.
